As the guards resumed their duties, Tarthan, alarmed at what they had missed by the diversionary tactics of the assassins, put a sharp word in their ears via their private comms links, making sure they were doubly alert. Moments later everyone’s attention was drawn to a thrumming noise coming from the outside.

“We’ve more trouble coming,” shouted Tarthan as he pointed to the approach to the estate through the open window.

The whine of multiple airjets was growing louder as they approached the landing zone at the edge of the property. There were two of them and they were travelling low, somehow bypassing the external security that should have disabled the jets and forced them to land at the perimeter.

“Who are they, do we know?” Dirk shouted across at him.

Tarthan cocked his head as he received an update in his comms unit.

“They say they are the Capellan Police Force and if they are fired upon they will level the buildings,” Tarthan added. He looked worried and went back to the window. He was communicating with his security detail, who Dirk knew would be taking up defensive positions ready to act immediately if things didn’t turn out to be completely above board.

Dirk remembered then, that they’d informed him they were going to pay him a visit after his unexpected space-port arrival, but he didn’t expect them to turn up like this. He should have anticipated something, knowing what he did about their background.

Dirk grabbed at Adjemon who was walking past, idly sucking at his raw knuckle while monitoring his staff.

“Take some people you can trust and get those three down into a cellar and keep them quiet,” he indicated the three prisoners e-cuffed in the corner of the room. He was rewarded with a happy vicious grin as Adjemon leaped to do his bidding.

Dirk turned to the two female Plantors.

“Lilspeth? You okay? Good! Stay right at the back, I think more trouble’s coming and we might need room to manoeuvre. I don’t want either of you in the firing line if they decide to play rough.”

She nodded and grabbed Elegin moving them both back to where the exits into the main corridor would allow them to leave quickly, if necessary, Neither of them were cut out for gunfights, they might manage a bit of special hand fighting if necessary, but they weren’t trained for anything more.

Dirk jumped on a table and shouted for everyone’s attention. He didn’t have much time and needed to get them out of here, but not in a panic. They quietened and moved towards the table, all of their attention now on him.

“Listen everyone. I’m really glad to be home and I’m very glad you all stayed. I know it’s been hard, but as of tomorrow we will begin to make things a whole lot easier on you all.” He waved his hands in a placating motion.

“Now, please quickly go to your stations. Don’t tell anyone what’s happened here this evening. There will be a big bonus
